Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Why dermal fillers?

There are many changes that occur naturally with ageing and among the most significant is loss of volume under the skin. This leads to changes like flattening of the cheeks, hollow temples, thin lips and noticeable lines such as nose-to-mouth (nasolabial lines) and drool lines (Marionette's). These volume changes are also accompanied by loss of collagen and elasticity leading to many wrinkles. Dermal fillers are skin wrinkle fillers, they literally sit in the skin and restore youthfulness by replacing lost volume.

Use of fillers

To better understand the use of dermal fillers, it is important to be clear about your requirements, whether this is for enhancement, restoration or refreshment. This is the kind of information that you will discuss in you consultation with Dr Boye, but we've outlined it below:

Refreshing treatments aim to improve overall skin and minimise imperfections

Enhancement - improves shape by sharpening contours

Restoration - add volume to fill wrinkles and lines

Treatment sites

Facial and lip filler treatments are the most common filler treatments. Dermal filers are increasingly being used for other area for example, in wrinkled hand rejuvenation, depressed scars and vaginal rejuvenation. The picture shows our popular wrinkle treatments with fillers.

Labioplasty ('Labial puff treatment')

An increasingly popular use of cosmetic fillers is the rejuvenation of the labia. With age, the labia naturally lose fat and thin out. This can result in intimate dryness, irritation and aversion to sex. Use of hydrating fillers help regain the contour and remoulds the labia. Clients report a high satisfaction with this treatment with a huge improvement in quality of life.

Hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a gel-matrix which is abundant in the body and serves many functions. It is a space-filling substance containing collagen, provides mechanical support and helps the nourishment of the skin. It is the reduced production and increased breakdown of hyaluronic acid that is responsible for most of the signs of ageing. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are therefore the most common type of cosmetic fillers. Their advantages are numerous - they are a natural product so present a low risk of allergy, are non-permanent and can be dissolved if you are not happy with the result. Their effects last between 6 and 12 months on average. There are many brands of HA fillers - Restylane, Juvederm, Teosyal, Perfectha and more; the list continues to grow. At Bloom Clinic, you have our guarantee that we will only use safe and high quality injectable filers for your treatments.

Biostimulatory fillers

Biostimulatory fillers are different from HA fillers because they contain other substances which stimulate the body's natural production of collagen, which causes a more sustained effect even when the filler has been broken down by the body. Therefore they are referred to as semi-permanent fillers and are often used as deep wrinkle fillers. Biostimulatory fillers cannot be removed after treatment and part of the result you see will depend on the body's response and residual ability to boost collagen production. Examples of biostimulatory fillers are Radiesse, Sculptra and Elanse.

Dr Boye's approach to treatment with these fillers is to first try HA fillers so you can decide if the result meets your desires and then do semi-permanent fillers at your next treatment.

What can I expect from the treatment?

You can expect to see instantaneous wrinkle filling, and this instant result allows you to work with Dr Boye during the treatment to achieve the result you want.

How long does it take?

Cosmetic fillers can be done as a 'lunch-time' procedure as it takes about 30 minutes. Recovery time is swift, meaning that downtime for you is minimal.

Are they safe?

Hyaluronic fillers are very safe as the substance is natural to the body. Additionally, the effect is not permanent and it can be dissolved. Side effects such as swelling and bruising are related to treatment and will resolve.
